Book review - It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover

Before you start reading this review. This is the second book in the series, so if you have not yet read "It Ends With Us" make sure to check out my review of that here It Ends With Us book review

"It Starts With Us" by Colleen Hoover is a book filled with passion, love, heartbreak, joy and hope. This is a powerful and consoling story of second chance at love, life and trust. However, It Ends with Us will be one of my favorite books and I'm obsessed with the story of Lily, Atlas and Ryle. I liked this book, as Hoover's words of describing every detail of Lily's and Atlas's everyday life had me lost in the story. And after "It Ends With Us", a closure was required for many characters in the story. This book is all about moving forward, on how to live life with all the happenings in life.

In "It Ends With Us" we saw the relationship between Lily and Ryle and how Atlas bumped into Lily's life again. Now in this series, Lily and Ryle are managing the care of their child Emerson after being divorced. Atlas and Lily go on a date but Lily starts to think about Ryle because Atlas Corrigan is the one man he will hate being in his ex-wife and daughter’s life.

There was a twist in the story, Atlas found out he had a younger brother and he took him to his home to take care of him. Josh was never happy with his mother, hence he refused to return and decided to stay with Atlas. But his mother busted out in anger when Josh doesn't want to stay with her. That is when Atlas decided to bring up a lawyer and take Josh's custody to him.

Though Ryle is still in the picture, Lily is able to keep herself and Emmy safe from his rage. One day when Ryle came by Lily's apartment, he noticed there was someone with her last night and he could easily make out it was Atlas. His temper over this was too bad and abused Lily and also sent threat messages to her. Lily was frightened by his anger and stayed with Atlas for a day in his home. Later, Lily decided to have a talk with Ryle along with Allysa and Marshall to resolve the custody of Emmy due to Ryle's anger; Lily was afraid to let him meet Emmy all by himself.

On the other side, Atlas had a talk with his mother to have Josh's custody to him. Now that everything is figured out in their life, it will all start with Atlas and Lily. Spoiler alert!! Atlas and Lily do get married at the end of the book and Atlas has the best vows prepared for his bride.

Unlike other books, this isn't the novel which consists of twists and turns. This is a story of healing, moving on with life, and how gracefully Lily goes on with her life. Because of the terrible past Lily had, she was able to tackle her present.

Here are some of my favourite quotes from the book:

“I can draw a seedling with two tiny branches. Yours and mine. We’ll be on our own brand-new, tiny family tree—one that starts with us.”

“My choice helped me realize that sometimes the hardest decisions a person can make will most likely lead to the best outcomes.”

“You’re stressing over things that haven’t even happened yet.”

“I may not be perfect, but I don’t deserve to fear for my life every time I make a mistake.”

“I prefer honesty over loyalty any day, because with honesty comes loyalty.”
